The Green Bean Coffee Co. was started by Kari and Tim Kyle in October 2009. We are both from this area, and our parents now reside in Kiowa County, but we had lived for the past 14 years in northwest Arkansas. During a visit in early 2009, we took a tour of the City of Greensburg's Sun Chips Business Incubator, and spotted a vacant space that looked like it would be awesome for a small coffee shop. A few days later, Kari even called to inquire about the space, though we could not quite imagine leaving our jobs in Arkansas to return to Kiowa County.
And then, Tim was laid off from his job. We talked about what we wanted to do with our futures. Kari had wanted to start a coffee shop, and both of us thought it would be great to have our six-month-old son, Andy, closer to his grandparents. So, we packed up our lives and headed to Greensburg to embark on our journey with The Green Bean Coffee Co.
In April 2010, having incubated our business properly, we moved across Main Street to a larger space at the new Kiowa County United building, and began carrying products of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
Our vision is to have a gathering place that not only serves great coffee, but does it with as little impact on the environment as possible. For instance, we decided to buy all of our equipment used. This not only gave second life to perfectly usable coffee machines, grinders, prep tables, chairs, tables, espresso machines — even our TV and Wii console — but it saved us a ton of money. Buying used did, however, bring on a new set of challenges, and Tim spent weeks making repairs to the equipment (usually without the help of manuals). At The Green Bean Coffee Co. we use paper, not foam, and our in-house service is done with ceramic bowls and mugs and real silverware. Like the rest of Greensburg businesses, we recycle everything we can.
At our new location in Kiowa County United, we are not only able to sell our existing specialties — espresso-based drinks, brewed coffee, specialty teas, build-your-own breakfast, deli sandwiches and soups — but will be adding old-fashioned soda fountain drinks and hand-dipped ice cream, malts and shakes.
What we value more than anything are the people that come in the door. We want them to have fun. We encourage silliness and give a nod to the good old days with an Etch-a-Sketch, card games, and a few good books by the couch.
